Whatever makes you think America is the global defender of democracy?

It's record the last 60 years. WW2 and the Cold War. And the Korean War in which about 50,000 UN, mostly US and Canadian, soldiers died. They didn't die, I hope, so the meglomaniacal regime from the North can loot and pillage the South.

[Edit] you suggest the Southerners go through ten years of misery until the invading regime finally collapses. Apart from the callousness of the proposal, its defect is that there is no guarantee the regime would collapse.

What democracy did we go to defend in the first gulf war?

This question is not related to the first. It didn't. It went to war to protect its interests and those of its allies in the ME. In the process it protected a not so bad regime (Kuwait) and a rather dreadful one (Saudi Arabia).

And if per chance Canada invaded Iceland do you think we'd go bombing them to kick them out?

If Canada didn't leave Iceland, where the US has an airbase, after the usual entreaties and then threats, I expect the US would take military action. But Canada isn't going to invade Iceland.

Perhaps you could come up with a more realistic strawman?

Your real point in your post is that the US has not been consistent the last x years. It seems to me it's becoming more consistent the last little while.

Actually, the US is the final guarantor of democracy - the UN and EU certainly are not.
