Mercur was a completely different property - nothing to do with the Goldstrike at all. Smith came via Camflo along with Meikle, Holt and others and, as important, a terrific record of good labour relations, and good mining practice. Smith turned down almost every mining project he ever saw but even he could not turn down Goldstrike! Hundreds of feet of .3oz+/ton in hole after hole. It simply could not be denied, a once in a lifetime company maker.

The hotels had nothing to do with it - but Munk and Gilmore made a second fortune there and this enabled Munk in particular to get started all over again in Canada.
