Schmitt as president of Omnipoint Communications Inc., the operator of a 30 MHz Personal Communications Services (PCS) license for the New York Major Trading Area (MTA) which covers 27 million people. Schmitt will also be executive vice president of the parent company. Schmitt, who is 52 years old, brings to Omnipoint 30 years of experience in the telecommunications industry. Most recently he was president and chief executive officer of PCS Primeco L.P., a personal communications service company formed by AirTouch Communications, Nynex, Bell Atlantic and U.S. West. Before joining PCS Primeco, Schmitt was executive vice president, international operations with AirTouch Communications. In 1990 Schmitt was given the responsibility for building and operating the first digital cellular system in the world -- the D2 GSM network in Germany. The D2 network, which is a joint venture between AirTouch and Mannesman AG the German multinational conglomerate, initiated commercial service in mid 1992 and became the most successful cellular network ever launched, adding over 1 million subscribers in less than three years. Earlier, Schmitt held several senior executive positions at Pacific Bell, including VP of operations for the wireline telephone network for all of northern California, serving 3.5 million customers, and managing 11,000 employees. Scott has been elected by the company's executive committee to the position of president and chief executive officer, effective immediately. Scott, age 45, previously had been president and chief executive officer of Bell Atlantic International Wireless, a position he bad held since May 1994. Scott joined Bell Atlantic Mobile in October 1991 and held various positions, including executive vice president and chief operating officer and vice president operations and chief operating officer. From 1979 until 1991, Scott held a number of senior positions at AT&T, including president and CEO of AT&T Canada. He began his telecommunications career in the sales division of C&P Telephone Company of Virginia in 1971.
