My profession was des-killed too. It use to take a good five years for a guy become a microwave engineer in analog times. Los of adjustments, fine tuning, failures that everytime was a different one from the preceeding one, etc.

Today the knowledge is in the blueprint. In the clever software that runs the test equipment. You don't need to repair. You scrap since its cheaper to build a brand new one than repair a damaged one.

Any computer-literate guy can line up, commission and service tramsission links.

Des-killing carmaker was good for guys like me. I have no mechanical skills. Have always bought new cars because I could handle reaprig a faulty-prone 70's vintage car.

Now it's just a matter of fuel it and send for regular service. And you need to hook it up a diagnostics system to service. No need for a good ear, or years of experience to be a good mechanic.
