I don't really know the reason that politics in the US resolves down to two major parties. I do know that there are plenty of minor parties that don't get anywhere.

The Founders did not want political parties, but they just grew. Even in the beginning there were more than two.

I believe that in some other countries the seats in the legislature are allotted according to how many votes you got nationwide rather than in your own region. Our system has one representative per region in the state based on the number of people, and two senators from each state. Vermont has a socialist representative. Texas and Alaska have had libertarians.
