For someone who lives in Germany, and is surprised about my statements, make me doubt how much you know about the industrial roots of the country.
Look I worked for Siemens for 18 years on their projects overseas and I had always to cut short Germans who tried to bullshit me into believe that there was something special about Germany out of the grasp of a non-German. (Japanese are like that too)

How Germany has always recycled: Cuckoo watchmakers into Telex machine makers, Porsche, machine tool etc.

They recycled the highly unionized workforces (mining and steel) by moving out of the Ruhr Gebiet down to the mainly rural southern Germany. The the Black Forest artisans of the Cuckoo watches and music machines were recycled.

They recycled the farmers into what is today high tech German industry. But it is not too late. Go to the book store. Get a good book and read. Then come back here and tell your side of the story. I am ready to apologize if I made a mistake.
