I'm at a loss to guess. What foreign policy humiliation like the Bay of Pigs did Bush suffer that drove him to topple Saddam Hussein?

BTW, I doubt that anyone advising JFK - at least anyone with a brain - thought that there would be anything easy about fighting a war in Vietnam. But if "demonstrating US power" crops up in any commentary from the time, it meant demonstrating it to the Soviets and any other communist potential aggressors to deter the spread of communism, not as an indication of US intent or desire to undo the spread that had already occurred (or for purposes of imperialist intimidation, if that's what you're driving at). JFK's chief foreign policy concern, like the two presidents before him, was containing communism - the point of the Cold War.
