PG- Thanks. I have not tried Rate of Change, but will check it out. I agree that most momentum indicators would more or less give me what a derivative probably would.

Regarding the function, I suppose I was imagining a computer generated fit to the principal move in the actual price over a certain period. One could then get a derivative of this. But you're right -why worry about it with so many indicators available?
