The only reason this 'glimmer' you talk about exists at all is because Sharon and Bush insisted on it - over your objections.

Hardly. God knows there have been enough glimmers over the years that one would think the process would run out of them. The glimmers that led to this glimmer were snuffed out by Sharon and Bush. So now the glimmers are smaller and smaller. Finally, they won't be there.

The last paragraph of Friedman's piece, I think it's the last, is the most telling. To continue down the path it is going now, Israel becomes something other than a democracy. And some folk start bailing out. And the Palestinian folk cycle down into civil war or into mayhem against the Israelis or both.

Tony Judt was right. It's Algeria. All over again.
