We mostly travel by car and camp out and maybe some B&B stays. That's exactly why we're heading out east again :o) You always find things off the beaten path. Two years ago I had a lot of VIA rail Canada points and we went to Calgary by train top of the line 2 rooms 4 beds, a real blast. We then spent 2 weeks driving around Alberta, Rockies, glaciers, stopped by the road not far from Drumheller and dug up some dinosaur bones. We made a good little find actually. Even in England we rented a car and spent an hour circumnavigating the country LOL.. but seriously we spent better than a week and drove all around and that was a blast too. Stonehenge at night without the tourists, Bath... cool.

We're looking to start taking month long chunks next year and American and Canadian West are both top of the list. I have a sister in California 10 years now I haven't visited yet..

Apologies ? Hey ! I was including us in the warts too. That's my point. It's nice to live where you have the right to complain but it's much more fun to take time to get to know the place...

Re: Rand-McNally earmarks certain routes as scenic. I highly recommend them.

<warts notwithstanding>

The landscape, sans Euro-Americans, is sublime. Every meager attempt by the 'locals' at congregating has resulted in appalling blight.
