EU Says Germany May Ruin Credibility of EU Rules, FTD Reports
By John Fraher

Frankfurt, May 12 (Bloomberg) -- The European Union said Germany must cuts its budget deficit next year or risk destroying fiscal limits introduced to protect the euro, the Financial Times Deutschland said, citing an unidentified spokesman for EU Monetary Affairs Commissioner Pedro Solbes.

Solbes is concerned that countries such as France and Italy will see no need to keep their budget deficits under 3 percent of gross domestic product if Germany misses that goal for a third year in 2004, the paper said. German Finance Minister Hans Eichel told the newspaper today Germany will miss that aim this year.

Germany, which last year grew at its slowest pace in almost a decade, is dropping its goal of balancing its budget by 2006 as a stagnant economy and rising unemployment sap government finances.
