i thought the standard explanation was somebody had the bright idea to differentiate them when the language made transition from spoken-only to written? at any rate, once i grasped that, it all made sense. more or less.

then you have my native tongue, in which everything - verbs nouns adjectives adverbs you name it - gets "conjugated" and virtually any root can become any grammatical structure with the appropriate mangling.

and you get whacked patterns like one DOLLAR, two/three/four DOLLARS, but at five it's back to DOLLAR. eeeh.

at least everything is pronounced exactly as written.
