Has Ted taken a
Turner for the worse?

Once he was known as Captain Outrageous and the Mouth of the South. But Ted Turner's dwindling fortune and influence have left his loved ones fearing the worst.
Beau Turner, 35, the mogul's youngest son, recalls that, last summer, when AOL Time Warner stock fell below $10, he worried that his father might kill himself.

"I told him, 'Dad, don't be like your dad [Edward]. Don't take your own life,'" Beau reveals in the next issue of Fortune.

The elder Turner had admitted in one interview that he felt "suicidal" after being fired by outgoing AOL Time Warner honcho Gerald Levin.

But Beau says his father "smiled at me and said, 'You don't have to worry about me doing something that extreme.'"

Still, having last week sold about 60million shares, more than half of his holdings in AOL Time Warner, is showing his 64 years.

In April doctors at an Atlanta hospital had to shock his heart to a regular beat. Fortune's Patricia Sellers reports that Turner has had a fibrillation problem for the past year, but the experience shook him - as did the thought that he needed a pacemaker.

"Ted is in a major transition at every level," says his ex-wife Jane Fonda. "And for an alpha male who has always been in control - or at least that part of life that we can control - it's very unsettling."
