Populists mostly fail because, like Perot, they arrogantly reject tax cuts as "bribing people with their own money".

I'm waiting for a populist movement that represents means-testing Social Security welfare for deadbeats like Phillips, as well as phased in privatization, a 10% flat tax that excludes all investment taxes, and the abolition of ALL federal health insurance programs via constitutional amendment.

THAT type of populist movement-unlike Perot and his party, could never be described as the manifestation of the collective illiteracy and ignorance of the unwashed, apathetic "independents".

Huey Long, George Wallace, John Anderson, and Ross Perot (as well as Saddam McCain) all shared one thing in common: They were a massive embarrassment to the republic...
