This is a hard question. As Buddhists would say, this is like eating a porcupine; you have to see it through to its proper ending or you'll be in pain.

If despite all the efforts by AQ and the like against the process in Iraq we manage to build a country that is the shining example of modern middle eastern state, then we have succeeded in curbing terrorism.

But I am not optimistic about this prospect because it takes stamina of doing it right at least for the next 10 years and probably for the next 30 years. This means more than one admin has to get it right. There is too much inertia internally and externally to do all the wrong things. We do not have a balanced approach with Israel. And there are people who will try to sabotage the process.

Regardless of doing it right or wrong, in the short term (say over the next 2-5 years) this is an unstabilizing process.
