WHO confirms cholera outbreak in Basra
By Associated Press, 5/14/2003 13:34
BASRA, Iraq (AP) The World Health Organization on Wednesday confirmed a cholera outbreak in southern Iraq, saying its lab results had showed the virus responsible for the disease was present in samples taken from Basra.

Last week, a WHO team sent 38 suspect samples from three hospitals in Basra for final testing in Kuwait's national laboratory, after local Iraqi labs confirmed 18 cases of cholera. Four cases tested positive for the disease.

WHO officials say the cases hint at a much wider epidemic in the region. Basra has had a history of cholera annually but health officials say this year's outbreak was triggered early because of the war.

Hospitals in Basra have been reporting increasing numbers of patients admitted with diarrhea and other gastrointestinal complaints. Cholera is a waterborne disease that can be treated on early detection. It can prove deadly, though, especially if the victims are malnourished children.

Health experts have been warning of the potential for a large outbreak of cholera given the shortages of water and the lack of sanitation in the southern Iraqi region.

Residents in the city of 1.3 million went for weeks without running water, and some resorted to desperate measures. Many collected their drinking water straight from the murky Shatt al-Arab River or pilfered water from working pipelines.
