(retro-fitting old buildings is another interesting topic) However, that additional "really" outside cover is not used. That is, the one earlier used to make the building look like an old building without all that stuff. Note also that industrial, _functional_ buildings have almost alwys been "designed" in the same, some are even on purpose built to look like what they do (honesty). That is, the basic factors of "functionality" and "honesty", something should both be "functional" and "honestly" show how, what it does. The other possibility is obviously to make "something" look like "something else".... After those basic goals the architect(-ure) then adds suitable (minor) things, re-arranges within those limits, adds other, maybe more "human elements", humor, colors, materials, etc, as long as it, preferably, adds something. Some other factors is that "real" humans do not just watch pictures, they actually arrive to the place, building while watching everything (else), then see "the thing", and enter, walk around, actually use the building, and then leave.. One very functional issue is, for example, that one already before entering a building has some basic idea of it. etc,etc,etc... Ilmarinen Btw, not every 1700-1800-1900s institutional building needs to look like something the romans built some 1,500 years ago. However, one could easily claim that was "functional", even "honest" of those times. Btw,btw, similar things are basic ingredients of music, can be "lousy" but even some level of honesty helps a lot. One can even honestly try to sound like something one obviously cannot.. (one reason W Marsalis honestly points to his function as an institutionlized and personified museum)
