Well, I had some links, but they have disappeared... Anyway, she is a (fairly) small "colored" woman, used a cat-like "purrr" every know and then, mostly more agressive than just "feels good". Considered on the level, almost, but not quite, as Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, etc.. (but nothing like Holiday) r-sounds like a regular french, additionally sometimes lyrical like that..ouch..names..french chanson woman (one reason she then managed fairly well in france) Anyway, there were some problems both with the USA recording business and civil rights, as late as in the 70s.. (??) I would not be surprised if she had a voice in early Batman productions, and one of the links gone now are of her singing "what a difference a day makes", in a kind of "tight way" maybe even slightly "agressive". (additionally, in her style, more like "speaking" than "singing") "Sexually" she also got into problems in USA who did not really appreciate her (cat-like) behaviour on the stage, not even in New York.. That is, not really classified as "jazz", much more like "entertainment", "show-business". --- cut--- Found her, but to continue a good trivia... X was politically active and controversial during the Vietnam era. It is rumored that she was black-listed after a luncheon at the White House, when in a discussion with Lady Bird Johnson about the Vietnam War left the First Lady in tears.
