What you are saying is correct, and yet, to make such a statement would be analogous to saying that my wife's presence in my life didn't make me a better man. It did.

You are right - it is vital that a society would be built on sound principles - but interrelationships with other countries do have a great influence as well. No man and no nation live in a vacuum.
