I have this pet theory that America can only support a two-party system because most everyone is indoctrinated in the high school sports mentality - two teams, everybody has their own colors and fight song and cheerleaders and you stand in the bleachers cheering your side and booing the other guys. Not too mature but a fun game for the masses. A multiparty proportional representation system that allowed for some real ideological divergence would just confuse the hell out of the average voter. So instead we get attack modes and the politics of personal destruction, brought to you live on Fox News and Hard Copy.
