Yes, that is not exactly "land of the free" type behavior, where it should be up to the individual as to whether he or she wants to place their life on the line....
IMO, the military is better off without people who do not wish to fight, or at least do not wish to fight in foreign wars. By the time my number was on the infamous "draft lottery wheel", I knew Vietnam was a losing proposition, partly because our leaders did not have the willpower necessary to go all out and win. In any case, I had young kids at the time, so they only would have taken me if things really got out of hand.... Plus I have a bad foot from a an extremely bad sprained ankle from bending my foot completely sideways when I stumbled in a badly cracked sidewalk at the age of 14. It blew up like a balloon, and then got well enough for me to act almost completely normal when walking, but that may have not been good enough for the military.... The pain from that old injury really came back this year to haunt me, and slowed me down a bit.
