Perhaps. With respect to air travel, life has become more inconvenient. What freedoms have US citizens lost in the last two years?

Perhaps what you see as "apathy" in US citizens is reasonable satisfaction with government. For instance, the US is not about to see a nation wide strike as is coming up in France and elsewhere as response to the government changing pension arrangements.

Generally speaking, there is less regulation of business, large and small (the vast majority of US small business is sole proprietorship), in US than in Europe and a greater rate of business formation.
