I think that there is a rule that the Big Ten must only expand to states bordering current Big Ten states. Since Virginia does not border any current Big Ten states, I don't think VT could go. If the Big Ten does decide to expand, I think Pitt is probably their first choice.

The other option for VT is the SEC, if the SEC wants to go to 14 teams (doubtful) or if the SEC kicks out Vandy (doubtful).

I think VT will have to be an independent for a couple of years, and hope something opens up in the meantime. This thing is far bigger than the Big East and the ACC. It will have far-reaching ramifications. I think the main driving force is the realization that the future of college athletics is with football, not with basketball. The end game really depends on what the next BCS contract looks like. A couple more articles:

After this thing plays out, I'll post about VT's 40 year struggle to find a conference home. It looks like the struggle will continue.
