With respect to Eric's post and your follow-up question, I suspect that the likely differentiation would occur along the lines of daytraders and certain hedge funds (smaller orders with a time sensitivity component) gravitating toward ECNs vs. institutions (large orders with a price sensitivity component) whose manner of operation involves sending orders directly to MMs for working.

Also, the non-direct access retail types (E*Trade, Ameritrade, Schwab, etc.) will have their orders routed to the market makers, and get screwed with greater ease... Ahhhh, the good old days! lol
