I carry as much cash as I estimate my transactions will require before I can get more cash. With the advent of debit cards, ATM's, and cash back options at grocery stores, I carry less than I used to, if normalized for transactions and income. This means I carry the same amount of cash as I did 20 years ago.

I think the chart reflects peoples preference for cash - I know of several seemingly well educated people who took thousands of dollars of cash out and went up to mountain cabins - just in case. These are the same people, of course, who rush out to the hardware store to buy duct tape for their windows and doors without wearing their seatbelts.
