An article from yesterday on PC growth.......

PC market to grow 3.3% in 2003, says Gartner

STAMFORD, Conn. --- Personal computer shipments are projected to reach 136.9 million units in 2003, a 6.6 percent increase from 2002 and PC revenue is set to total $170.6 billion in 2003, up 3.3 percent from 2002 revenue, according market research company Gartner Inc.

The company is forecasting a gradual improvement after shipments and revenue in the second quarter reach 30.7 million units and $38.3 billion respectively. Shipments would be up 6.4 percent from the second quarter of 2002 but revenue would be up only 2.6 percent if these numbers are realized according to Gartner.

However, as well as predicting unit shipments and revenues for the whole year Gartner said that beyond the second quarter the strength of the PC market would depend on the timing and pace of global economic recovery.

“The SARS outbreak in Asia is already having an appreciable impact on select economies in the region, and there is a rising danger that the outbreak could significantly impact the entire region if intra-regional trade is severely disrupted,” said George Shiffler, a principal analyst with Gartner.

Intel's Centrino is not expected to boost notebook sales in the short-term and the Tablet-PC, an attempt to introduce a new shape of computer into the market launched in November 2002, has captured only 1 percent of total shipments in the first quarter, Gartner said.
