Good post. You are right, it is unlikely they could have or would have overthrown him on their own. The mass graves turning up now demonstrate how effective his regime was in destroying any potential dissent.

so how could you really expect that people in Iraq would get together on overthrowing Sadaam, i read that people were afraid to even walk by the house of one of the son's... I would have agreed with you until all those brutal regimes were overthrown in the 1990 timeframe, it can happen. The key ingredient seems to be availability of western media, or free media. As long as rulers like Ceucescu (Romania) can keep people from knowing whats going on, they are ok. I think the internet does nothing for these sorts of regimes, its even harder to control than TV. The reason I think Iraq might have been capable of overthrowing Saddam is because Iraq had all the infrastructure to receive free media, people were educated and capable of organizing. Places like Sudan don't have that, in a lot of African countries people are still living in grass huts, there is no infrastructure whatsoever. Personally I think the US sanctions did nothing but keep SH in power. The Iraqis hated the west and that meant they didn't have the will to overthrow SH. Had we just kept out of there, things might have been better who knows. I don't know- its anyone's guess really.
