You can't tell by a name. After all, who would guess that someone named Neocon would turn out to be Jewish?

However, Olcott was certainly not Jewish.

George Graff, Jr. (not merely George Graff) is more elusive. Though I don't know whether Jewish families then ever used the Jr. designation -- I have never seen it used, but that doesn't mean it wasn't. But I can't find out much about him.

There are Irish Jews aren't there? Not that either of the two writers mentioned necessarily were.

How wonderful that you know so much useless trivia and can at the same time completely miss the point I was trying to make about popular culture.

The song White Christmas was written at poolside in southern California by the sunbathing and thoroughly jewish Irving Berlin, nowhere near the time of Christmas .... and if contrary facts show up, blame CBC radio for these, that's who told me -g- ... it was written to a deadline, as well, or the movie was being produced on a deadline, something like that ... someone else famous, not Bing Crosby, collaborated on music and/or lyrics, can't recall the name

.. typed the above before consulting google, turns out there is a never-recorded first verse that places the singer in Beverly Hills - kcmetro.cc.mo.us

The sun is shining
The grass is green
The orange and palm trees sway.
I've never seen such a day
In Beverly Hills LA.
But it's December the 24th
And I am longing to be up North.

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know.
Where the treetops glisten,
And children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow.
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write.
May your days be merry and bright.
And may all your Christmases be white.
