You luxuriate in such a regime, whether or not you appreciate it. A liberal democracy is a mixed regime, with elements meant to restrain the tyranny of the majority, more specifically to dampen the ardor of demagogues. In that sense, it is liberal because it is conservative, and resists being moved to rash action, or to depredate minorities, including the affluent. The United States is constructed to ensure that public question are ventilated, and that there is a maximum of deliberation before anything of substance can be enacted. Thus, we demand concurrence between legislative houses; give chief executives (the president and the various governors) a veto, which can only be over- ridden with a supermajority; expect judicial review when there are constitutional questions at stake; and so on. We encourage a very free press; make office holders stand for election at relatively short intervals; usually hold public meeting in government, and supply transcripts to interested parties; and solicit citizen input in many instances, as during congressional hearings or regulatory meetings. We extol such ideas as a free press, religious liberty, and due process in the Bill of Rights. All in all, we are very fortunate to live under such a regime........
