Thanks RCM - that was indeed the article I saw.

Reading it now, it strikes me that these instruments wouldn't benefit from the tax break, because they seem to be interest-based rather than dividend based. Ah, well - so much for that idea.

However, the 8+% yields these offer are still attractive given the meager amounts you can get elsewhere.

One of my pet investments looks like it is going away - these were the Gabelli Tax-Preferred B shares - they paid around 7% per annum in the form of long-term capital gains. Unfortunately it looks like they are being called, so I recently sold out.
