Cary, >If IT was worth a damn, then companies dieing to lower operating costs would be upgrading equipment while they are cutting personel. We all know that they are not.,

IMO, I see corporations upgrading equipment prior to rehiring employees. The rationale, technology and IT can run 24 hours per day, day to day, work loads transferred from time zones to time zones, without closing down at the end of the day and with no fringe benefits, etc. pay.

Quote Greenspan in Bob Woodward's book MAESTRO, "Computers and the internet were at the root of the extraordinary porductivity improvement. Computers allowed vastly better inventory management in a way that had bee unimaginable only years before. What was truly remarkable, however, was the vast dissemination throughtout society of the new technologty and the speed of the dissemination. All of this dissemination added productivity growth throughout the economy. There was little question that further major advances lay ahead."

I see no reason to doubt the above. However, the tremendous retraining and education for layed off employees and new employees will be vast, IMO.

This nonsense has got to stop. Options granted at $10 okay, maybe even $5, but a penny a share? Give me a break! This is outrageous and any shareholder of significant shares should let the company know so. I do not recall any such thing under Morgan's watch, and here is a guy getting rewarded for taking on absolutely no risk whatsoever. This is intolerable....they should be embarassed. I for one will review where AMAT stands in my portfolio after this, as I firmly believe this type of behavior is negligent on the part of the company and the compensation committee.
