A few years ago now, I took a really in depth look at Weirton Steel. At the time, they were uniquely profitable in the US steel industry, sort of like what Southwest is to the airline industry today.

I worked the numbers, read the filings, liked what I saw, and almost bought a bundle of stock (or debt). I refrained from buying though, because I was afraid of the general environment within the steel industry at the time.

Today, Weirton Steel filed for bankruptcy, yet another victim of higher operating costs in the US and higher energy costs.

Sometimes one gets to count one's blessings by observing what opportunities one didn't exercise...
