I've observed Matt and his methods for a long time and though I still think I'm head and shoulders above him as an Admin (age bringing wisdom and stuff like that) if not in stature, there are elements of how he does the job that I really prefer to the way I did the job. Foremost is the lack of secrecy about suspensions and terminations. Especially suspensions. Though I did strive to be as consistent as I possibly could be here, a lot of the perception of inconsistency was caused by the secrecy. To name specific and very real examples, people who were suspended but pretended not to be. "I went out of town for a few days", etc. It led people to think that sometimes when a person had done something suspendable, they didn't get suspended at all, and I was being inconsistent. Or if I suspended someone for vulgarity or a personal attack, it would sometimes be presented as "I was suspended because I'm long this stock and Bob's the head of a huge shorting conspiracy." Such things not only occupied a lot of my time addressing the misgivings, while only being able to do so inadequately because of my self-imposed secrecy about suspensions, but also fostered belief that inconsistency existed where it really didn't. As are so many things in SI's future, this one also isn't set in stone yet, but the direction I'm leaning is to have a separate page available that shows the 100 most recent suspensions, their length, when they happened, my admin notes that went with it, and, if possible (for example, with posts that weren't privacy invasions), links to the deleted posts that resulted in the suspensions. I think that with something like that in place, not only do I get largely freed from the workload of dealing with complaints of inconsistency, and the stigma of that inconsistency being accepted as fact because I'm not free to discuss any specifics, everyone can glean a MUCH clearer idea of what to expect from me as an admin without me having to do things like giving a list of "forbidden words", etc in the TofU. Edit: What I'm envisioning is basic disclosure. Not public derision of the incarcerated or anything like that.
