My brother who is living in Riyad Saudi Arabia is back in the states for a few weeks. He passed though about 3 hours away, so my family was able to drive up and see him for a couple of hours. Mostly we discussed family matters and he was jet lagged, but he did have some insites into current affairs.

The biggest impact is the closing of the American school. Without a school people do not bring their families (even Americans from oil companies who are not otherwise affected by the pullout of troops). When you don't have families, then the career minded middle management don't want to come spend a year or two and that changes the whole characteristic of the people. Young single men are the most likely employees to stay, and that increases friction with the local population. The net effect may be a dramatic shift of the oil infrastructure to Kuwait and Iraq. It's still too early to tell for sure and the American's there are still stunned.
