Will SI be paid subscription only? Short-term, yes. Long-term, no. Same business model as iHub. Free limited access including posting privileges. Subscribing will enable extra features. There are issues to work out with this before implementing, not the least of which is not wanting to damage the "elitist" (at least, that's the way I see it, and it's a good thing) nature of the site. A possible solution will be to allow limited free posting but only to new sections of the site that don't currently exist, with maybe only 1 post per day to currently-existing areas. Have some time to decide on the details still. Will people still be able to access the coffee threads without membership? Don't know the answer to this one yet. It ties in to my signal/noise issue. Free access to coffee shop threads was something implemented shortly before the end of my tenure and I'm not really clear yet on the workings and philosophies of it.
