Interesting post, Noel. A couple of comments.

1. The comments from the trial are very interesting. I gather that's your translation. Are there others?

2. Thanks for the link to the exchange between Lewis and these two critics in the NYRB. I encourage everyone to read Lewis' responses.

By that I don't mean Lewis is right or wrong. I do mean that Lewis' views are not uncontroversial within the field. And thus should not be treated as the lodestone against which all other efforts should be measured.

It seems ironic to me that this case demonstrates that Lewis has been an overly sympathetic apologist for Islamic civilization. I believe he was, after all, one of the chief popularizers of the myth that Islam has historically been more tolerant than Christianity.
