Just finished. I have the feeling it would not interest you. It's typical New Yorker in that there is the mandated rambling structure. Move from personality to personality, leaving the reader to discover the link. Finally, she gets to what I think was the thesis. And it goes something like this, though I could be completely wrong.

Several right wing Hindu politicians have discovered they improve their electoral prospects by inciting violence against Muslims. She takes us on a tour of such. Then she concludes by arguing that the real responsibility lies with the failure of the Congress Party to establish a national secural identity in which the poor were linked to a nation state rather than to a religious identity. Now they are available for mobilization on that identity.

Plausible argument but certainly could use some more argumentation.
