Well, first of all, it's not mine and it's not mobile.

Putting that aside, the business was started by a neighbor about a year ago and it's been interesting to watch how it has evolved. My neighbor financed the start-up himself - I would guess that he has put less than $500,000 into it so far. He intended to offer residential wireless broadband in suburban communities but quickly discovered that the real opportunity was elsewhere. He is now signing up large commercial customers - typically the owners of large office buildings, who see his business as a way to get a jump on the competition in the scramble for tenants. My friend's cost for high speed internet access is a fraction of the cost that the competition is offering. Interestingly, he recently received an offer from RCN to fill in all the gaps in their network, of which there are many. Motorola has made his business a high profile partner and is asking him to provide technical advice to other start-ups using the Motorola Canopy system. He has just hired a second full time sales guy - both of his salespeople are former heavy hitters who have been out of work for a while - and he also has a small technical group on the payroll. Last but not least, he has received to date approximately 20 unsolicited debt and equity investment offers from blue chip players from VCs to commercial banks.
