I rented diesel cars there and was amazed by the cleaness. Being used to dirty diesel trucks and buses in places like Indonesia and Brazil it was a surprise: No smoke. No smell.

And when compared to the gasoline cars it was more economical indeed.

-5 Degrees C, in winter, and they strated like any other car. I was amazed because Diesel are know not to start on cold weather.

Advanced Engines: Compression Ignition Direct Injection (CIDI) Engines
The direct injection of fuel into the combustion chamber of an engine yields improvements in thermal efficiency and overall fuel efficiency. Engines that ignite the fuel solely by compressing it—known as "compression ignition" or diesel engines—have a high energy efficiency, and the application of direct-injection technologies can further boost the fuel efficiency of these engines.

Turbocharged Direct Injection (TDI) Diesel Engines
The turbocharged version of the CIDI is popular in Europe, and is now available in automobiles sold in the United States.

New diesel technologies with greater use of electronic management and direct injection with unit injectors or common rail injection, can achieve further fuel consumption improvements.
