"Why is Uncle Joe just tired, while Auntie Fay is "addled" because she is a female??"

I don't know why. Both terms seem to me to be soft compared to others that could have been used and which connote something more cruel. Labels are tricky things, that's why we occassionally like to retire them. Idiot and moron were once simply clinical labels that offered a categorization for persons with a particular IQ score. This was intended to help them qualify for the funding that would ensure adequate or appropriate services. We don't use those words these days except when trying to purvey a combative tone.
