he annoyed me once explaining to me how a gold standard => persistent inflation, though what he was really talking about was a fall in prices.

There is a cost factor to owning gold and storing it as you must back additional dollars with additional gold if you use a gold standard. He could of meant what he said in practical terms. Dollars increase there of so must gold holdings.
