Nokia Corp. (NOK), the world's largest phone maker, has lost further ground in the market for handsets that comply with the second-largest technology standard, according to market research figures published Wednesday.

Anglo-U.S. research firm Strategy Analytics estimates that Nokia supplied only 7.6% of the CDMA, or code division multiple access, phones shipped in the first quarter compared with 11.3% in the same period a year ago. By contrast, Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea increased its share of the fast-growing CDMA market to 29% from 26.6%, according to the research firm.

The research suggests that Nokia's recent efforts to improve its position in the CDMA market have yet to bear fruit. The Finnish company has been pouring resources into developing better CDMA phones as it strives towards its target of a 40% share of the whole handset market.

Strategy Analytics said Nokia had 35.1% of the total mobile phone market in the first quarter, compared with the Finnish company's estimate of 38%. Another research firm, International Data Corp., said Nokia's market share in the first quarter was 35.5%.

A spokesman for Nokia said his company's share of the CDMA market continues to be around 10%. "The first quarter in CDMA wasn't great for us," he added. But Nokia is planning to roll out a raft of new CDMA models, including color-screen handsets, this year.

Strategy Analytics said that Nokia further strengthened its grip on the much bigger market for mobile phones that comply with the GSM, or global system for mobile communications, standard. Nokia had 43% of the GSM market in the first quarter compared with 38.6% a year ago, according to the research firm.

Strategy Analytics estimates that 68.8 million GSM phones and 22.2 million CDMA handsets were shipped in the first quarter out of a total market of 108 million units. However, Nokia estimates only 98 million mobile phones were shipped by the industry in the first quarter. <<
