A contract worth around US$ 170 million was signed today in Guangzhou for these 40 metro trains, which are to be used on the city’s new Line 3. About 80 percent of the supplies and services are to be rendered by Siemens. “With this new contract only 14 months after the rolling stock order for Shanghai’s Line 4, TS has further strengthened its position in the growth market China and particularly in the Guangdong Province,” explained Hans-Dieter Bott, TS Group Vice President, at the contract signing ceremony. The total local value-added content represents around 70 percent of the order value. This high local content has been achieved by providing most of the material supplies and services from Siemens China and it’s partner ZELW. The first metro train for Line 3 is scheduled to be delivered to the customer in September 2005, with all 40 units being handed over by the middle of 2007. Plans call for passenger service to start initially with five metro trains on Line 3 in December 2005. The operation con-cept of line 3 requires a speed of 120km/h. With this concept Guangzhou Metro Corporation (GMC) is again taking a pioneer role in the development of China Metro systems. With 15 underground railway lines planned, Guangzhou is the third largest individual market in the People’s Republic of China after Shanghai and Peking. The network of heavy rail lines to be built in this city of nine million inhabitants will eventually stretch over 400 kilometers. The next projects in the region will focus on metro lines 4 and 5 as well as on the interurban rail link between Guangzhou and Foshan. The very first metro line in Guangzhou was built under the terms of a turnkey contract by a consortium that included Siemens. The signaling equipment for Line 2 also was supplied by Siemens Transportation Systems.
