The problem with DB last year or two was that they saw air transport as their competition. This is BS of cosmic proportions... The real competitor is, at least in Germany, the autobahn, the car transport and that's what the numbers of course show (the drop in personmiles of DB and the increased traffic on the other side).

The pricing and ticketing system was taken over in toto from Lufthansa (early purchase discounts, rebooking penalties etc). This was, said again, BS of cosmic proportions. The rail should as convenient as a cab. But it was not.

The two LH coneheads (personnel transport and marketing) got fired, but Mehdorn stayed, because the Chancellor could not find anybody better to run the enterprise.
