JEDDAH (Reuters) - Three Moroccans arrested in Saudi Arabia earlier this week in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah planned to hijack a civilian airliner in the kingdom, a Saudi security source said Wednesday.

"They were planning a suicide hijack to attack Saudi landmarks," the source told Reuters, adding they were arrested at Jeddah airport Monday.

Saudi authorities said Tuesday they had arrested three suspected members of Osama bin Laden (news - web sites)'s al Qaeda network in Jeddah. It was not clear if the arrests were linked to last week's triple suicide bombings of Western residential compounds in the capital Riyadh, which killed at least 34 people.

"They were thwarted by Saudi forces who had no help from outside," the security source added. The FBI (news - web sites) is helping Saudi Arabia investigate last week's bombings.
