That is Dell's business model, to go after the low hanging fruit after someone else does the R&D. They are after ink profits too.

HP has its work cut out for sure. The layoffs were probably needed just to show people the old ways don't work any more. I well remember the old days when I was a summer intern at HP in 1978 and I was amazed they paid folks so much money to sit around and gab. I was used to washing cars, selling paint, busing tables and washing dishes as past jobs where you could not sit around and talk about "neat stuff" for most of the day until your boss gave you something to do and actually wanted it done. When I left in 1998, there were still a few of those types of folks there, but not too many. Now it seems they are working much more like Intel employees who are always scared for their jobs. Maybe not as much fun, but should be better for shareholders in the long run.
