Why shouldn't the wealthiest people in this country contribute more taxes (on a percentage basis) than the poorest?

Why shouldn't we, as a nation, ask those of us who can afford it to step up and take on a greater financial responsibility than those less fortunate? It's all part of the price we pay to live in the greatest country on Earth.

I'm all for fixing the tax system and removing most, if not all of the special interest group based loop-holes. At the same time, I don't thinks it's "unfair" to ask those who are better off to pay a greater share of the burden to keep our government working.
