Some search engines make their last x number of searches available to the public. If someone tells you to enter your credit card number in a search engine on a public forum and you reply that you are about to do it, it might be a good idea to cancel your card immediately.

Having said that, not sure what all this privacy of card numbers fuss is about. How many gas station attendants do you think have had the opportunity to not only get the card number, but the verification ID and the signature as well?
