This is what Byrd said when Truman was attempting to integrate the Armed Forces. He vowed never to fight in the military "with a Negro by my side." Then he went on to filibuster the 1964 Civil Rights Act and vote against Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas, the only black nominees to the Supreme Court.
