John,

Throwing out Vesper to my Ricochet is fair but silly. I can point to many CDMA operators making real money while I doubt you can point to a single Wi-Fi network operator making any money. Why is that important? Well, if the operators cannot make money then eventually the equipment providers will have no-one to sell to.

Again, I am not arguing that Wi-Fi is not good and compelling technology, but I see it in the same light as many other technologies that promised so much but in the end turned out to be fairly ordinary.

I am a metrics guy. Show me the numbers and I will start to believe, but everything in your post sounds more anecdotal then empirical. "The technology is a winner. It just hasn't won yet" What does that mean?

John, here is an answer to your "loss leader" comment from the horses mouth, as it were.

"NEW YORK - The challenge facing companies in the wireless technology industry is to stop talking about whiz-bang future offerings and start generating cash, AT&T Wireless Services Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John Zeglis said Thursday during a keynote presentation opening the Global Wireless Summit conference in New York."

Does not look like he is planning GIVE IT AWAY as you stated so emphatically.
